la nostra storia

Madeo Vietina was an ambitious traveler who made it around the world twice in the late 1800s and early 1900s. As a Navy Sailor, Madeo came to California in 1906 for a few months to offer support for the San Francisco earthquake, before coming back to Italy to marry his wife, Maitó. Together they had a daughter, Bianca. As she grew up, he told Bianca stories of his travels, including his time living in Los Angeles. Bianca passed on his stories and her recipes to Madeo’s grandson, Alfio.

To embrace his grandfather’s legacy and to pay homage to his mother’s unmatched cuisine, Alfio and his family opened Madeo in Los Angeles, and manages it to this day with his sons, Gianni and Nicola. In 2019, Gianni & Nicola also opened Bianca restaurant. To this day Alfio still says “Buongiorno Madeo!” every day he opens the doors.

Italian restaurateur, Alfio Vietina, started his career in hospitality at 14 years old. At 19 years old, Alfio took over his first restaurant in his hometown of Forte dei Marmi. In the early 1980’s he introduced his dining concept, Madeo.

In pursuit of their dream to bring their beachside Italian dining experience to California, Alfio and his wife, Elvira, moved to Los Angeles in 1983 with their sons, Gianni and Nicola. In 1985, Alfio and his family invited Angelenos to embrace their timeless family recipes when they opened their doors on Beverly Boulevard in West Hollywood.

Madeo made a temporary move to Beverly Hills in 2018 where it served guests for just over two years. From offering takeout for the first time to expanding al fresco dining during the pandemic, the family & staff continued to show up every day to provide guests with a sense comfort and a bite of luxury.

The restaurant’s location may change from time to time, but the heart of its cuisine remains in the family’s hands. In 2022, Elvira, Alfio, Gianni and Nicola reopened Madeo on the corner of La Cienega and Sunset Boulevard.
